So you started knitting, and you love it. You want to grow out of the plastic set that you got at JoAnn’s, or the nickel-plated Knit Picks into something a little smoother, a little more professional, and a lot more responsive. It would be really nice to not have to worry about buying new needles again for a long time. You’ve also noted that you seem to get a new needle for every project, and it would be nice to have a complete set.

Well, there are TONS of options out there, but there are a few that are just, well, better. The well-known names in knitting needles include HiyaHiya, Addi, and the set I’m going to be showing you today – ChiaoGoo.  Needle quality in knitting needles makes a huge difference in the comfort while you work, the reduction of snags at joins, and the consistency of stitches – making a quality needle imperative for quality work.

Who is ChiaoGoo?

ChiaoGoo is based out of China, and has been making fixed tip needles for years. They have recently started offering interchangeables in kits of either stainless steel or bamboo. The stainless steel kits have a slightly longer taper than the HiyaHiya needles, and both sets of points are fine enough for to grab your p3tog stitches, but won’t annoy your finger if you use it to press the tip of the needle (as I do). The sets come in a lovely floral carrying pouch and have a ribbon on the outside – red for the stainless steel, black for bamboo tips. This set also comes with an Artsiga Crafts drawstring bag – perfect for projects on-the-go!

Let’s Talk Needles and Cords:

The needles use a screw and key join configuration, which you may have seen before if you’ve used Knit Picks interchangeable needles. There is a small hole in the cable, and a fine T rod fits through to tighten the join between cable and needle tip, ensuring stability through your project. This hole also functions as a built-in lifeline (WHAT!?). Thread a small piece through the hole, and knit as usual periodically through your project. Voila! Lifeline! Essentially, a backup for your work. If you make a mistake – no need to scratch the whole project, just unravel to the lifeline.

The needles in this set have two different sizes of screws – smaller screws on smaller tips, and larger screws on larger tips.  This means you’ll combine cords within the kit to get the size you need for the project and tips you’re using. The brushed stainless steel tips are smooth, but not so slippery that bamboo yarn or silk will fall off of them. They are also super lightweight, making longer knitting sessions a breeze.

This set retails for $133 and contains 13 needle tips in US 2 (2.75mm), US 3 (3.25mm), US 4 (3.5mm), US 5 (3.75mm), US 6 (4mm), US 7 (4.5mm), US 8 (5mm), US 9 (5.5mm), US 10 (6mm), US 10 1/2 (6.5mm), US 11 (8mm), US 13 (9mm), and US 15 (10mm). Each needle tip measures 5″ (13cm).

The set also comes with two sets of cords, one set for the needles with S screws, and one set for those with the L screws. Each set has three cords, one each measuring 24″ (60cm), 32″ (80cm), and 40″ (100cm). They are red, non-kink, nylon-coated multi-strand steel cable, and are very strong, and slightly firm.  In addition, it also has two S and L end caps, one S and L cord connector for making even longer cords, two cord keys, a ruler/needle sizer, and a set of colorful stitch markers.

One of the only complaints about this set is that the size differences of connectors are not color coded. Yes, you CAN tell the difference, but it would be easier if the L cord connectors were coated with color just to make it very easy to match your cords. Occasionally, after longer knitting sessions, other reviewers noted that they might need to tighten the joins, although they almost always stay connected and snag-free.

Bottom line:

Considering the size of the set, quality of the product, and added accessories, this is a fabulous price. Individually purchasing these needles at JoAnn’s, Michaels, or even online at Amazon is going to cost you at least $10 or more per needle size, and will not include the variety of lengths, accessories, or carrying case.

The cords and needles are of high-quality material, long-lasting, and versatile. Due to the range of sizes, these will work for almost any projects from socks to hats to sweaters to scarves. ChiaoGoo Twist is the right set of needles to last you a very long time, through many knitting projects!
