Hand Embroidery Box or Buying Everything Yourself?

When you’re starting a new hobby, there are always way more bits and bobs available that you think you might need – but you really don’t need as much as the internet tells you! Kits and boxes are available all over the internet, but what is the best bang for your buck, buying stuff individually or curated for a specific project?

Also, how do you actually get started? How do you finish a project? What’s the best site for stitch learning?

One of the better places on the internet to find both tools and education is Bluprint. Not only do they have specific project kits, but the creme de la creme of learning to embroider is their Bluprint Box: Hand Embroidery. The box includes just what you need, and excellent access to longtime crafter expert videos and teaching tools.

If you read further, you’ll see that I compared purchasing the pieces of this kit at JoAnn’s versus buying the box – there is definitely a difference, and you’ll save some significant money!

What’s Included:

So, in the Bluprint Box: Hand Embroidery, you will receive the following:

  • Printed pattern included with your supplies
  • Boundless Solids 1-yard cut (Marshmallow) (fabric for stitching)
  • 30 skeins of DMC floss (depending on where you are in the world, these can vary widely in cost)
  • 8″ Plastic Embroidery Hoop
  • DMC embroidery needles sizes 1-5
  • DMC embroidery transfer pen
  • DMC needle threader
  • DMC embroidery scissors
  • Bluprint canvas tote
  • AND…
  • Access to the Startup Library: Hand Embroidery Class

Wait, There’s a Class? Awesome!

Not only do you get instructions and tools, but Bluprint offers lifetime access to their teaching classes, as well. You’ll learn from expert crafter Kat McTee how to utilize the tools in the box, and how to transfer your new-found skills to your own patterns!

You’ll learn how to transfer patterns, hoop the fabric, stitch the stitches, finish up the project, and how to display it!

All of the box elements are relevant to the class, and there will be leftovers when you finish for you to start your next project. OR, if you’re like me and sometimes have to rip things out, you don’t have to worry about having enough supplies.

Not only do you get access to the class, but when you purchase a Bluprint Box: Hand Embroidery, you receive one-month free access to ALL of their training tools. It’s essentially a free month to their subscription service included with your purchase!

Also, if you’re already a subscriber, you get 15% off of your purchase of the box.

Okay – But…

What’s the catch here?

Well, the box is an investment at $65.00. However, if you purchase the elements individually, you will spend more than that, and you might have to make more than one trip back to the store for something you forgot.

The class may not be perfect for everyone, but for those of us who are visual learners and like to see stitches done rather than read about them – it works very well. There are also great reviews on the site that will help you make a decision about if this learning style is right for you. You can find them here:

The products are of good quality, but you may find that you prefer bamboo hoops, rubberized plastic, or other styles of fabric. This is meant to be a starting point for beginners and will help you determine which tools you prefer to use, and which you’d rather not.

Is it Worth it?

Ultimately, YES.

Here’s why – I went through and priced everything out that I could find for you. Keep in mind that these are just the elements in the box, not the class or free month of access to all of the subscription services.

JoAnn’s:

DMC Floss:$ 1.79-$1.99 per skein individually – at 30 skeins, this is $53.70 at the cheaper price.

Plastic hoop: $3.79

DMC embroidery scissors: $9.49

Solid color cotton fabric: $4.19/yd

DMC Embroidery needles: $1.19

DMC Embroidery transfer pen: $6.49

DMC Needle Threader: $3.29

This doesn’t include the pattern, tote, class, or subscription month.

Total: $82.14 – at the cheapest.

Bluprint: 65.00 (plus 15% off if you become a subscriber)

What do you think? Worth the time and investment to learn a new hobby, continue learning and creating, and have plenty of supplies to work with? I definitely think so!!

Leave a comment below if you’ve had the opportunity to try this box and class, and let me know what you thought of it!

  1. Thank you so much for the review. I like the fact that classes are offered with purchase. I am new to the craft, so having the instructions would be so helpful!

    1. Thanks for checking it out! It’s so great that people are trying to create value instead of just profit, and helping people learn something new!

  2. I don’t know how to embroider, but I love when I see the super snarky ones online (you know, the ones with stuff like “Damn, it feels good to be a gangster” and things like that!). Thanks for the review.

    1. These are my favorite embroideries to do! I just recently did a cactus with “don’t be a prick” embroidered above it! XD

  3. Hi there, this is a helpful review of the bluprint box for hand embroidery. I was actually surprised to see that there are classes included. I’m more of a visual learner for these types of craft so this is definitely a big plus. I may I have to keep pausing and replaying to catch up though lol. I’ve done some embroidery in the past but I stick to cross stitch mostly when I have some time, I find it quite relaxing. This post is encouraging me to try it again.

    1. That’s really the beauty of learning through videos – you never feel like you’re annoying when you have to rewind and hit replay, lol! Kat is a great teacher, and I love how she explains stitches – very thorough, and you really feel like you “get it” when you’re done. Thanks for stopping by!
